Bascome to return to ring in Bermuda

Fighting fit: Nikki Bascome signs a glove for a young fan at Aries Sports Centre in the Washington Mall, during an open sparring session organised by Controversy Gym on Friday night. The Bermuda professional boxer attended the event as a guest

Nikki Bascome is set to return to the ring on November 24 at the Fairmont Southampton.

Billed as the “Redemption”, it will be Bascome’s first fight since being knocked out by Portuguese Fábio Costa at the same venue 12 months ago.

Bascome, whose opponent is yet to been confirmed, has been training under Jeff Mayweather, the uncle of Floyd — the undefeated former multiple-weight world champion — at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas for the past few months.

He turned to Mayweather after his longtime coach Allan “Forty” Rego died aged 86 of cancer in February.

Bascome felt his defensive deficiencies were exposed after being knocked out by Costa in the fourth round of their welterweight bout and needed to change tack. He believes he has already made significant technical adjustments under Mayweather and is reaping the benefits of training in a professional environment alongside world champions and top prospects.

The 27-year-old, who has lost one of his eight bouts, came home last week to spend time with his family but will return to Las Vegas to continue his preparations shortly.
