Daniel Augustus encountered a tough day during the final round of the New Hampshire Open at the Stonebridge Country Club yesterday.

The Bermudian professional carded a seven-over-par 79 that included six bogeys, a double bogey and a solitary birdie.

Augustus finished the 54-hole event tied for 36th with a three-day total of five-over-par, 221. The former Bermuda Open and Bacardi Par 3 winner endured a horrendous time on the front nine where he carded four bogeys and a double bogey at the par-three 6th hole to make the turn at six over.

However, he coped much better on the back nine, which he played at one over after carding two additional bogeys and a birdie at the par-five 17th.

Jason Thresher carded a 15-under-par 201 to win the New Hampshire Open by two shots and claim the $10,000 winner’s purse.

Augustus made the cut at the event for the second straight year after carding his lowest round of five-under-par 67 — that included six birdies and a bogey — during the second round on Tuesday.

“Made the cut again, happy about,” Augustus said.

That impressive display fell just shy of Augustus’s tournament best seven-under-par 65, which he achieved in the final round of the same event at the Owl’s Nest Resort & Golf Club last year. Augustus went into the tournament with some momentum having finished tied for nineteenth in a field of 52 at the Greater Bangor Open held at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course in Maine at the weekend.

He started on the back foot after carding an opening round five-over 74 but bounced back with impressive back-to-back rounds of four-under 65 and two-under 67 to finish the 54-hole event at one-under 206.

Last month saw Augustus clinch his third straight title at the Bermuda PGA Stroke Play Championships at Tucker’s Point where he shot a superb final round of 66 to win by five strokes over Anthony Mocklow.

• Bermuda’s Kenny Leseur has made the cut at the Optimist International Junior Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

He has a two-round total of 156 for 12-over par and is tied in 45th position.
