The lack of a major event like 2017’s America’s Cup will affect tourism figures in the next quarter. Kevin Dallas, chief executive of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, said the tourism boost created by the event will be hard to replicate, but the industry had built strong momentum.

Mr Dallas said: “I think the second quarter will be hard to replicate year on year, but we will have our best go at it and for us it’s more about what the full year looks like than the quarter.

“Month to month, things can fluctuate. Quarter to quarter, things can fluctuate as well, but really it’s about that long-term trend.”

He added: “My own prediction is that we will continue to see air arrivals perform strongly.

“I would expect that we will see some retreat on the average daily rate because hotels achieved such high rates in May and June of last year that were driven by the America’s Cup.”

Mr Dallas said hotel bookings for the next quarter are lower than for the same period last year. But he added: “We would expect to see that because when we had the America’s Cup in front of us, we were seeing people booking much further in advance.

“We are now returning to more normal business and a shorter booking window so we don’t think that is a cause for concern. What we have been seeing is our hotel partners picking up pace month to month and, in particular, picking up business for the month in the month, so there’s a quick turnaround.”
