Mr. Spencer's class dreams of presents

I wanted to know what primary children were choosing for Christmas presents so I journeyed up to St. George's Prep School where I interviewed Mr. Phillip Spencer's P6 class of 15.

The class was extremely polite, the students spoke in turn, and everyone voiced his or her opinion. The class was quite enthusiastic and I was impressed at the level of their communication skills.

Listed below are the questions I asked with the childrens' responses: What's the most wished Christmas presents for girls? Responses: High on the girls' list were creatures that require nurturing and responsibility - dogs, rabbits, birds and small pets in general. Barbie dolls and the Spice Girls with accessories for both such as clothes and a diary were popular suggestions along with a bean bag chair.

What's the most wished Christmas presents for boys? Responses: At the top of the boys' list were clothes, legos for building things, a punching bag, CD rap music, and trampolines.

Are there any new games you would like to receive as gifts? Responses: Chicken Limbo, Rotten Egg, Hot Potato, and Splat! What type of gifts might you consider for your family, friends and teacher? Responses: Hand made crafts like pot holders, a clay mug and little clay animals, and picture frames. Creative gifts such as a handwritten poem, home made card, drawing a nice picture or sewing something. The gift of various plants, grown and cultivated, by the student. Baked goods such as sugar cookies and brownies. Doing chores around the house for parents, grandparents or neighbors who are unable to get out.

If money were no object what would you buy for your family? Responses: Boats, cars, nice new clothes for every body in the family, a jet, a fabulous vacation, a new stove and fridge, a big four story house, a guest house for family with ten bedrooms, a limousine, a private beach, a hotel with a pool, a cruise ship, an island, a year's supply of groceries, china dinnerware with flowers on them, a gold ring, gold watches.

These kids were very sophisticated and sweet! I was most intrigued with their answers to the last question because their choices expressed incredible family visions.

For example, the boy who wanted the hotel with a swimming pool said he would work with his family by cleaning the pool or assigned tasks to make the family business successful. He would enjoy spending time with his family even if it involved work and responsibilities.

One of the girls wanted a private beach to share picnics with friends and relatives and a place to take her mom to relax after work.

The dreams of these students reflected love and strong family values.

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year to express love with the gift of the words, "I love you'' to those most dear to you.
