Grandmother lines up for 'dirty job'
"Do not despair, Droppings is here!"
This is the slogan for a new Bermuda business, Droppings, aiming to capitalise on the sanitary disposal of animal waste.
Entrepreneur and grandmother, Phobe Saltus of Pembroke, says the idea stemmed from the recent media stories concerning the illegal disposal of animal waste in household garbage.
"I saw that Government had an ad that people can no longer put waste in the garbage," she said.
Ms Saltus said she thought about the elderly and those people without transport who could not take their animal's waste to the Tynes Bay incinerator, so she said: "I figured maybe this is something I can do."
Another reason for starting the business was that Ms Saltus now looks after her grandchildren following the death of her daughter and she said: "Now I won't have to worry where they are if they are with me."
Friday was the first day Ms Saltus had placed in ad in The Royal Gazette, and she said she would deal with any animal waste.
An animal lover herself, Ms Saltus owns a cat.
She also said she was extremely excited to be starting the service and that she was hoping to get a small van to make her pick ups, and that she will travel anywhere on the Island to help dispose of the poops properly.
The health inspector has been consulted and Ms Saltus said they were willing to help in any way they could.
She says that poops must be properly wrapped in plastic bags or in newspaper and brown paper bags. There is also a $15 fee for the service with additional charge if bags need to be supplied.
"It's a dirty job but I'll do it" said Ms Saltus.
