Veteran was impressed November 25, 1999
I once again had the privilege of visiting the Bermuda Islands and while there I visited the Cenotaph for the November 11, laying of the wreaths and total ceremony.
I happened to have been one of the people who wrote about last year's ceremony. It behoves me to write again to say how pleased I was to be in the audience and to have participated in a beautiful ceremony of Remembrance. This ceremony brought back memories of how things were.
ERNEST CUPIDO Veteran, Canadian Forces Keep neighbourhood tidy December 1, 1999 Dear Sir, We neighbours here in Frith Estate, South Shore, Warwick -- next to Sun Valley -- have long been envied for our quiet, Peaceful, clean neighbourhood until the settling in of new neighbours/neighbour on Clouds Avenue -- the first avenue off the main estate road -- who without thought put their Garbage at the estate verge in front of Clouds Avenue the day before collection -- giving a cat, dog or rat the opportunity to break into the bag of yummy odours -- spilling many pieces of content on the grass.
The garbage collectors do not pick up spillage -- therefore from one collection to the next and on, there is a mess for all to see on their way through the estate.
This verge is mowed by neighbours and we sure would like to see it kept tidy! A PROUD RESIDENT Warwick Classic sets good example November 28, 1999 Dear Sir, I must take time to fully commend the World Rugby Classic held at National Sports Club earlier this month. The event was well organised with Police patrolling traffic throughout the event. Also, a security firm was on hand to assist parking.
I must say the Bermuda Football Association can learn a lot from this annual event. Many neighbourhood area residents have been most inconvenienced and put through hell when BFA stages major football games by fans parking and blocking residents roads and homes. Take Devonshire Recreation Club, for example. When there is an FA or Martonmere Cup tie, you just can't get home, nor can emergency vehicles gain proper access to homes. Under the leadership of past President Charlie Marshall, he provided hired Police officers to monitor and keep traffic flowing on Frog Lane and Roberts Avenue.
This programme was scrapped under the new BFA executive and guess what. It only cost $28 an hour to hire a Policeman so residents would not be blocked from getting to their own homes. Football is the highest gate taker of any sports event in Bermuda. Again the World Rugby Classic organisation needs to be highly praised and it is time and long overdue that the Bermuda Football Association acts more responsibly.
FOOTBALL FIELD AREA RESIDENT Devonshire Ideas for ferry service December 6, 1999 Dear Sir, It was great to see the large turnout of people at the meeting on December 2 concerning the proposed changes to the Paget/Warwick ferry service. It is obvious that the service presently offered is important to a great number of people.
Government stated that the mandate put to the National Transportation Management team was to get more people to use public transportation and leave their cars at home. Why then is government reducing the service offered at present? The ride on the Paget/Warwick ferry is a great way to start and end your day. I am also writing to Mr. Jacobs at the Ministry of Transport but would like to offer a few of my thoughts through this forum: 1. The idea, which was presented at the meeting, of picking people up at their door and dropping them at the ferry is totally unworkable. However, has any thought been given to a mini bus service from Middle Road down to the ferry? 2. Has any thought been given to the idea of offering parking at a site away from the ferry and having a mini bus service to the ferry dock? 3. A new high speed ferry has been purchased for the Somerset route. Has any thought been given to purchasing a smaller ferry for the Paget/Warwick route which could be utilised during the off-peak hours? Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia offer this service which is very popular with the tourists.
4. If some smaller ferries were bought they could be utilised to extend the present route further into Warwick, or even Spanish Point, utilising existing smaller docks.
I am almost positive than none of the authors of the proposed plan have ever used the ferry on a regular basis. It is obvious that many people who do use the ferry, plus those employed by the ferry service are willing and able to help Government produce a workable plan for the Paget/Warwick route.
The schedule as presented at the meeting is unworkable and unsafe. It was stated numerous times at the meeting that no decision has been made concerning the new schedule. I think a decision has been made and the only question is when Government is going to implement the plan. I hope that the introduction of the plan as presented will be delayed so that a workable plan can be put forward.
BRYAN MCLEOD Paget Great night for tourism December 9, 1999 Dear Sir, Two weeks have passed since the Visitor Industry Partnership held the "Excellence Awards' at the Southampton Princess. These awards were presented to people who were recognised by the community for their valuable life-time contribution to tourism! The evening of Saturday, November 27 was their night to shine and this they did, in brilliant fashion, in front of four hundred people.
Forty-five people were nominated as the best in fifteen categories of the hospitality industry. The overall winner, The Best of the Best, received $20,000 in a Money Market Fund sponsored by the Bank of Butterfield and presented by the Minister of Tourism.
Bermuda-based hotels and properties they represent overseas, cruise lines and airlines, all very special Bermuda partners, were most generous in donating prizes to the finalists. Astwood Dickinson Jewellers supplied the creative design and sponsorship of the Awards Pin while the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel created a wonderful background for this very special evening.
Bermuda thanks each of you.
Several of the Award Winners were seen in Hamilton on Monday proudly showing their gold pins to friends. A wonderful sight of professionalism being recognised.
Congratulations to the Visitor Industry Partnership for this excellent programme.
W.A. (TOPPY) COWEN Chairman Flatts Village Development Committee Keep politicians at home December 8, 1999 Dear Sir, May I take issue with Mr. Peter J. Willcocks of Smith's Parish when he says in his letter that "the longer politicians stay out of their Country the less confusion they cause at home''. Speaking purely self-servingly, I would personally have as many as possible of them over here. For what would I (or the lizards, for that matter) do without them on Fridays, bless `em? I trust this establishes that Mr. Willcocks and I, despite a slight similarity in our names, are two quite different people.
He writes letters. I draw.
PETER WOOLCOCK Pembroke
