Opening the trial yesterday morning, prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told the jury: "This case is about an attack on a defenceless 17-year-old girl by these two defendants because she wouldn't let one of them use her cell phone.

"It's about a girl who was beaten with a piece of wood by the defendant Cann and later on beaten with a rock by the defendant Roland."

Cann, from Pembroke, and Roland, from St. David's, deny wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Miss Symonds, from St. David's, told the jury she had been spending time with friends near the lighthouse prior to the incident. She explained she walked away from them and down Mount Road to check that a friend who had walked off was alright, and tried to call her on her cell phone. At this point, she said she heard the angry-sounding voice of Cann. She explained she'd met ]Cann three or four years ago through a friend and Cann was living next door to her at that time. When she walked away, Cann caught up with her and asked her if she'd seen the friend who walked off. Miss Symonds replied no."She told me to give her my phone. I said no. I didn't know if she would have give it back or not," she told the jury, explaining Cann was accompanied by an unknown male and female. When she walked away again, she said Cann hit her on the head with a stick five or six times. She estimated the stick to be around 18 inches long."I tried to tell her 'stop' and tried to walk away," she said. "Garrina told the other girl to get me."Next, she said, the other girl picked up a rock around 12 inches wide and five inches tall from the road, and pushed her from behind into a wall. Then, she said, the girl hit her on the head with the rock three times."I was crying," Miss Symonds recalled. The attack stopped when a friend of hers approached. She told the jury she did not see where her attackers went and cannot recall being taken to the hospital."I couldn't really see because all I saw was blood coming out of my head," she explained, saying she then felt herself starting to black out.According to prosecutor Ms Burgess, both the accused women were interviewed by the Police. Cann admitted to being in a fight with Miss Symonds but denied using any weapon and denied knowing Roland.Roland told Police that Cann beat Miss Symonds on the head with a piece of wood. However, she said she felt sorry for the victim and intervened to help her.The case continues.
