Diabetes centre offers free foot exams

Free foot examinations will be offered for diabetics starting this month. The new service will take place once a month at the Diabetes Resource Centre, on Dundonald Street.Podiatrist Lachlan Armour ,of Henagulph B N & Associates, said the new clinic was a result of Age Concern’s 50+ Lifestyle Expo last November.“I went to the expo and while there spoke with representatives of the Diabetes Association at their booth,” he said. In this dialogue the idea of such a service was suggested and Mr Armour said all parties felt it would work well.So the free diabetes foot assessment clinic is a partnership of the Association with the private podiatry office Henagulph B N & Associates. It will take place on the last Wednesday of every month from noon to 2pm. Assessments will be by appointment only and will include an initial examination of the feet, a foot care management plan and an evaluation of footwear.“We see a lot of diabetics in private practice,” said Mr Armour. “Diabetes affects the feet quite a lot. Those who cut their own toenails or those trying to get rid of calluses may cut the skin and develop an ulcer or infection and this can lead to amputations in some cases,” he added.“The whole idea of the clinic is to prevent problems before they start.”Appointments can be made by calling 297-8427. The first clinic will take place next Wednesday, January 26 from noon to 2pm.
