‘Golden angel’ Dennikia inspires scholarship

Dennikia Lambert

Bermuda’s “golden angel” Dennikia Lambert has inspired a scholarship fund after her roadside death last summer.

The 14-year-old Berkeley Institute student touched the lives of countless people before a collision took her life in July of last year.

After being inspired by the teen’s “positive influence on people’s lives,” Rosa’s Cantina paired with Gosling’s and Butterfield & Vallis to start the Dennikia Lambert Scholarship fund for students in her graduating class that share her loving and enthusiastic nature.

Dawnette Smith, Dennikia’s mother, said that — as an honour roll student — a scholarship properly encapsulates Dennikia’s generosity and academic commitment.

“She was quick to help out her friends: like, she would come and ask me for money — wouldn’t tell me what it was for — and go help someone else in need,” she said. “For another child whose parents don’t have the finances to send them off to college, that’s an excellent step towards furthering their education.”

To raise funds, “golden angel” cocktails and mocktails will be sold throughout the month of July. Cupcakes will also be sold at takeout areas in Rosa’s Cantina and Chopsticks in her honour.

Lindsay Durham, director of operations and human resources for Rosa’s Cantina, described Dennikia as “a ray of sunshine”.

Ms Durham said she first heard of Dennikia through co-workers and personal friends. It wasn’t until she attended Berkeley’s tribute to the teen, however, that she understood what kind of impact she had on those around her.

“There was a young man who said in the presentation he didn’t have any friends, and Dennikia came up to him and said ‘Well, I’ll be your friend’,” she described. “And you could tell that she made such a difference in this young man’s life.”

After discussions with Dennikia’s mother, Ms Durham and members of her staff set about creating drinks, cupcakes, and collection jars in her name. $1,000 worth of proceeds was raised within the first five days. Ms Durham said she hopes to reach at least $50,000 by the time Dennikia’s class graduates.

The fundraiser will continue during the month of May for the next two years. Once all the proceeds have been collected, spokespeople from Rosa’s and Gosling’s will work with the Berkeley Institute to choose a deserving applicant they think reflects Dennikia’s compassion and drive.

Dennikia was an avid dancer and athlete with dreams of studying forensic science.

“I don’t think she ever knew how many people she touched,” Ms Smith said of her daughter.

“I couldn’t wish any more from her or even from her sister — they’re doing me proud.”
