Food for thought

Crown and Anchor at Cup Match(File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,

In the June 2 edition of The Royal Gazette, there is an article entitled “Your AC survival guide” by Catherine Burns. This article has a subtitle on Best Food Vendors, in which she writes: “For healthy options, Devil’s Isle is hands-down your best bet. Save the junk food for Cup Match if you have to and don’t let the AC undo your good intentions.”

Cup Match has been an important and historical event in my life, as I’m sure it is for the majority of black Bermudians. Whether you attend the game or listen to it on the radio, it is significant.

It is on those two days that Bermudians get to eat traditional food, be it fish chowder, conch stew, shark hash, curried mussels and, yes, even local fish. It is a celebration of our emancipation and our food.

You can imagine how offended I am by the comments in that article.
