Musical heaven: Concert series celebrates local talent
“The party I never had”, is how one veteran Bermuda musician describes an upcoming concert of local talent. The second Giant Steps concert will be held at the Pembroke Community Club this month. The concert will feature the Dennis Fox All Stars Band and will honour saxophonist Jade Minors and Clarence (Tootsie) Bean. The event is being organised by Dale Butler, executive director of Atlantic Publishing House, and Darlene Hartley, of MyThyme Productions, and is part of the Giant Steps 2012 series of concerts celebrating local musicians and entertainers.“I am really looking forward to it,” said Mr Minors. “To be playing with the fine musicians that Mr Butler has put together I feel like I have gone to musical heaven, and I haven’t even stepped out on stage yet. I think I couldn’t be in better company. It should be Dennis Fox and the ‘All State’ Band because I am definitely in good hands. (A reference to the Allstate insurance commercial slogan.)”Mr Bean has been performing as a drummer for more than 70 years and has played with Ruth Brown and the Countsmen. Mr Minors’ tenor saxophone music has been called “fiery” by reviewers. His last regular gig was at Hubie’s Bar where he performed from 1994 to its closure in 2004. He is now retired.“The show is an effort to keep musicians employed and to showcase their talents,” said Mr Butler.Vocalist Sheila Smith, who will be performing in the concert, said she used to find gigs night and day, but these days many musicians need a day job.“Now my regular music gig is as a church organist,” said Ms Smith. “My passion, however, is jazz music, although I have sung everything.”Bandleader Mr Fox said: “One of the things that this whole thing is about is to bring jazz alive in Bermuda. We play all genres, but we are more rooted in jazz. That is the most important part for us. We want to put musicians back in the scene again.”Mr Butler said the first Giant Steps concert sold out fairly quickly, so they are moving to a larger venue for this concert. They are expecting a large crowd to come out and enjoy some dancing and high quality Bermudian music. Other musicians performing will include Stan Gilbert, and celebrity artist Professor Keith Caisey, percussionist, and Wendell (Shine) Hayward.“Keith Caisey has made an international reputation for himself in Cuba,” said Mr Butler.Mr Butler is currently arranging another band called ‘The Giant Steps Band’. So far Mr Fox and five others have been selected. The ultimate aim of the concert is to send The Giant Steps band to perform in the 2013 Cuban Jazz Festival. The January concert will be held under the distinguished patronage of Dr Richard Cann. The show will be on January 22 at the Pembroke Community Club. There will be raffles, light refreshments and special gifts for the audience. Tickets for the second Giant Steps concert are on sale for $50 from Music Box on Reid Street or by calling Mr Butler at 505-3409.
