No time to waste as Tyler Christopher pursues title shot

Straight back at it: Bermudian welterweight, Tyler Christopher, right, is preparing to step back into the ring just weeks after his previous fight.

Tyler Christopher is adamant there is no time to waste in his pursuit for a Midlands title as he prepares to step back into the ring just weeks after his previous fight.

The 27-year-old, who extended his perfect professional record to six wins with a convincing victory over Luke Middleton in his previous fight at the end of last month, is due to face journeyman Justin Menzie at the Holiday Inn in Birmingham, England, on Saturday.

Despite the limited time between bouts, Bermudian welterweight Christopher has no concerns of possible fatigue against 40-year-old Menzie, who has won five and drawn one of his 23 bouts.

“I’m not worried at all, I actually prefer to have another fight so soon after my last one,” said Christopher. “I only really got hit twice in my previous fight and they were just grazes, so I basically came out of it untouched.

“Getting back in the ring is what I feel like I need because I don’t like the big breaks in between. I’ve just gone through that training block, I’m at weight and have that momentum behind me, so I’m ready to go again.”

The bout will also see Christopher make the step up from four rounds to six for the first time as a professional and he is well aware of the importance of adjusting his fight plan and ringcraft accordingly.

“Making the step up to six rounds doesn’t worry me at all,” added Christopher, who regularly spars over that distance with experienced professionals at the D&A Boxing School of Excellence in Birmingham.

“In preparation for my fights, I’m always doing some top-quality sparring against tough guys over six to eight rounds and so I’m more than ready.

“I’ve been told that this guy is coming to fight; he likes to give it a good go, and can be a little unpredictable. That doesn’t worry me and the fact it’s a six-round fight gives me a chance to work on a few things and how to manage longer fights.

“A knockout in this fight is not important; in the past I went looking for a knockout but the priority is just to get the victory and work on managing the fight properly.”

Should he gain an expected victory, it will take Christopher one step closer to fulfilling his ambition of challenging for a Midland Area title, with that chance potentially coming towards the end of the year if he maintains his perfect record across another two or three fights.

“My manager has been really pleased with my progress and wants to fast -track me towards fighting for the Midlands belt,” said Christopher.

“Hopefully I only need to have another two or three fights after this one to put me in line for a title shot.

“That’s why the priority right now is to get those victories in and also get the bigger-round fights in because for a title shot it will be at ten rounds. If I can get my record to 9-0 or 10-0 pretty soon, then there should be more chance of a title fight.

“To be able to win a Midlands title would be a real accomplishment and something to be really proud of. I’m already pretty proud of what I’ve done over here in England but winning that title would make me even more so.

“My name would be on that belt and in the history books and that can’t be taken away. It’s also the first stepping stone to bigger titles in England and Britain, so having an area title really helps put your name out there.”
