TCD to trim salary bill

The Transport Control Department will cut salary spending by $230,000 in the next financial year, according to Transport Minister Terry Lister.Speaking at the House of Assembly, he said salaries and wages were set to make up more than $3 million, approximately 45 percent of the total department budget for 2011-2012.“You may recall there was a five percent increase in vehicle license fees in the 2010-2011 budget. The fees collected assist in covering the many programmes and improvements services offered not just within TCD, but across the Government.“It is anticipated that in 201½012, the Department shall collect $26 million in revenue,” he added.Speaking on a wide range of transport issues, Mr Lister said TCD underwent improvements last year including the speedy delivery of service. He said: “With improved service delivery the average waiting time for customers has been reduced from [90 minutes] to just under 15 minutes; and as low as eight minutes with most customers expressing surprise at the long lines being a thing of the past.Mr Lister said people were utilising the online option and approximately 35,985 appointments were made via the internet.“Overall 3,049 vehicle owners took advantage of the on-line licensing function; an average of 254 vehicles per month,” Mr Lister added. He also told MPs about efforts made by the Road Safety Council to curb public speeding, increase road-side sobriety testing and introduce the Bermuda Youth Licence. The Council advocated for changes to the most frequent accident locations around the Island in 2010-2011, he said.According to Mr Lister, the most noticeable changes were to Crow Lane with rumble strips, additional lighting and signs courtesy of the Ministry of Works and Engineering.“The Council continued to explore all means of getting the message out in the area of road safety by using the radio talk shows, the Road Safety website as well as Twitter and YouTube,” he added. He said there were 2,211 accidents and 13 fatalities during the last financial year.l Useful website: www.gov.bm
