BHC receives funding boost

More affordable housing units are expected to be made available as the Bermuda Housing Corporation receives a 33 per cent boost in capital funding.

David Burt, who delivered the 2025-26 budget statement today, said $17 million has been allocated to BHC this fiscal year.

He explained: “These funds will continue the record investment in affordable housing made by this Government and are expected to support the delivery of 30 additional affordable housing units in 2025.”

The BHC capital and housing grant is the largest capital projects allocation for the year and comes less than a week after Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, said BHC expects to complete several units this year.

They include 12 units in Harmony Terrace East in Paget — all which have already been allocated — set to finish by June and four in Middle Town, Devonshire, earmarked for December completion.

The Budget statement added that the Ministry of Housing and Municipalities was allocated $7.5 million this year, $1 million more than budgeted in 2024.

Mr Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, explained: “Funding to the ministry will support the development of a long-term affordable housing strategy in collaboration with local stakeholders.

“Additional funding has been provided to complete the master planning for key residential neighbourhoods, including Mary Victoria Road, Alexandra Road and Cedar Park, focusing on improvements to water and sewage infrastructure, lighting and general home upgrades.”

The master plan was mentioned in the Speech from the Throne in March, and residents recently highlighted disruptions to water supply in the area.

Additional housing came on the rental market last month when the Bermudiana Beach complex in Warwick opened.

Zane DeSilva, the Minister of Housing and Municipalities, said at the time that nine of the 94 available units had been rented out and 13 others were “under agreement”.

Rent for the units, which include studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartment, ranges between $3,000 and $7,000 a month.
