15 years in jail for Canadian drug importer

A Canadian woman has been jailed for 15 years for importing $1.7 million worth of heroin and cocaine into Bermuda.Janet Grant, 47, of Scarborough, Ontario, was arrested after she arrived on a WestJet flight from Toronto and the drugs were found in her hand luggage at LF Wade International Airport.Her lawyer, Llewellyn Peniston said his “economically challenged” client was offered $5,000 by someone to bring the package into Bermuda but did not know what was inside it.Grant pleaded guilty to the offence last month. Her case comes after a number of others where female drug mules were caught and jailed.Last month, Bermudians Desiree Burrows, 21, and Shaniqwa O’Brien, 20, were jailed for 18 months for smuggling almost $30,000 of cannabis resin in on a charter flight from Jamaica.In January, 22-year-old Canadian Kayla Nicol was jailed for three years for smuggling cocaine into Bermuda to earn $5,500.She was arrested after arriving on a flight from Canada on January 16.In another case dealt with in January, Bermudian single mother Shanae Vanderpool, 26, was jailed for two years for smuggling $250,000 worth of cannabis into Bermuda.She was detained after arriving on a flight from Canada in December. She told police she’d been offered $5,000 to transport the cannabis.Another Bermudian, Co-Shae Bartrum, 20, is facing jail when she is sentenced today after admitting importing $657,000 worth of heroin last May. She pleaded guilty at Supreme Court in January.
