Man admits conspiring to pervert course of justice

Government Minister Neletha Butterfield’s grandson was yesterday jailed for nine months after he admitted conspiring to pervert the course of justice.K’Wonde Lathan, 21, of Bluff Lane, Pembroke, repeatedly called and texted his cousin, Chantice Butterfield, in a bid to get her to drop assault charges against alleged Parkside affiliate Prince Edness.Edness was arrested for pushing Miss Butterfield and causing her to fall down the stairs at Captain’s Lounge bar last February 8.While Edness was jailed at Hamilton Police Station, Lathan connected Ms Butterfield into a conference call with the offender.Prosecutor Kirsty-Anne Kiellor said the pair made Miss Butterfield feel she would not be safe unless she dropped the charges.Lathan was represented by defence lawyer Elizabeth Christopher.He was handed a two-year probation order for the offence in addition to the prison sentence.Upon release from jail, he will have to abide by a curfew for three months, refrain from using illicit drugs and submit to random drug testing.The former police cadet will also have to avoid involvement with criminal activity or gangs.
