Two Warwick women charged with financial exploitation of their grandmother

Two sisters yesterday denied stealing almost half a million dollars from their grandmother during a crowded arraignments session.The Warwick women, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were both charged with multiple counts of theft and one count of the financial exploitation of a senior.Both have denied all charges against them.According to the charges, the sisters stole more than $492,000 between July 2010 and January 2011.Chief Justice Richard Ground released both of the defendants on bail, ordering them to return to Supreme Court on April 16, 2012, for trial.Also appearing during yesterday’s arraignments session at Supreme Court was a Southampton woman who denied multiple counts of theft after allegedly stealing nearly $100,000 over the course of six months.Barbara Raveen Tannock, 42, pleaded not guilty to ten counts of stealing from Vorhees Place and Albertine Alice Place between July 20, 2009 and December 18, 2009.She was released on bail, and is expected to return to court next month for the matter to be mentioned.Erskine Phillips, 33, from Pembroke, also appeared, pleading not guilty to charges of aggravated burglary and possessing a prohibited weapon.Mr Phillips is accused of entering a Middletown Lane home as a trespasser and inflicting actual bodily harm on Wayne Wales on June 20.Chief Justice Richard Ground ordered Mr Phillips, who remains remanded in custody, to return to Supreme Court on October 3 for the matter to be mentioned and a trial date set.Also during the arraignments session, a Somerset man admitted attacking 57-year-old Randy Thomson with a screwdriver in a daylight attack.Shiloh Wayne Payne, 26, pleaded guilty to wounding and possessing a sharply pointed object in an increased penalty zone, Pleasantville Lane, which is within 300m of West End Primary.Payne had originally pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.The incident took place just before 12.30pm on March 20 near Payne’s Scott’s Hill Road home.Details of the altercation were not given in court but it is understood that Mr Thompson was hospitalised after suffering multiple stab wounds.Chief Justice Ground ordered a psychological evaluation of Payne be completed prior to sentencing, and for Payne to be brought back to court on October 3 for mention.
