Handyman given conditional discharge for having cannabis

A 29-year-old father was given a conditional discharge after a police officer discovered cannabis in his shoe.Warwick resident Aronde Morris pleaded guilty to a single count of possessing a controlled drug in Warwick on April 24.The court heard that at 7.45pm that day, officers stopped Morris on Middle Road as part of a search under the misuse of drugs act.An initial search of his body found nothing, however a drug-sniffing dog indicated towards Morris’ right shoe.A further search revealed a clear plastic twist containing plantlike material, later revealed to be 4.6g of the controlled drug cannabis. Morris apologised to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, saying he had been going through a difficult time.“I’m not a criminal, your majesty, and I don’t want to be charged like a criminal. I don’t want to waste your time or the court’s time.”He said he was a self-employed handyman, saying he had just come from a job at a lawyer’s home and had been given the cannabis, causing Mr Warner to joke: “I hope it wasn’t the lawyer who gave it to you.”Mr Warner sentenced Morris to two years’ conditional discharge. He noted that if Morris committed another offence a conviction would be marked against him.
