Probation ordered for man who struck pregnant girlfriend

A man who admitted striking his pregnant girlfriend while she nursed their child was sentenced to two years’ probation and time served.Keino Lambert, 22, pleaded guilty on July 3 to unlawfully assaulting Shatequa Trott and causing her bodily harm at their home in Warwick in an incident the previous morning. The court heard earlier that Lambert slapped Ms Trott twice while she was nursing their ten-month-old child before telling her: “I don’t like liars.”He then punched her in the mouth, causing her to bleed.Lambert has previous convictions for violent offences including assault, assaulting police and violently resisting arrest. He was on bail for another charge of causing grievous bodily harm, when the offence took place.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said that a psychiatric report found that nothing was wrong with Lambert except abuse of drugs and alcohol.“It indicates that your problem is you must leave the weed alone,” Mr Warner said. “You are a violent man who won’t leave drugs alone and as a result, beat up your girlfriend because she wouldn’t cook for you.”He sentenced Lambert to time already spent in custody, to be followed by a two-year period of probation with a number of conditions, including that he must refrain from using alcohol and illegal drugs.Lambert must also submit to random drug tests, go through any programmes recommended by court services and abide by a curfew for the next six months.
