Man denies $16,700 theft

A St George’s man has pleaded not guilty to stealing almost $16,700 in valuables from a Devonshire property, as well as drug possession.

John O’Connor, 29, is accused of trespassing on the Sousa Estate Road home on December 14, and taking items including $3,000 cash, two gold rings, a gold bracelet, four watches, an iPhone, earrings and three necklaces, worth a combined $16,696.84.

Magistrates’ Court also heard this morning that Mr O’Connor was allegedly caught with quantities of cannabis and cocaine on May 16 last year.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released the defendant on $2,000 bail for the drug offence and $10,000 bail for the burglary, both with a like surety.

The matter is set to return for trial on April 7.

Also in court, a Sandys man has denied assaulting a police officer and using offensive language.

Anthony Basden, 53, is accused of committing both crimes in Sandys on March 6.

Mr Tokunbo set Mr Basden’s bail for $2,000 and ordered him to return to court on May 9 for trial.
