Man fined for keeping and breeding dogs

A Southampton man has been fined $1,500 for breeding and keeping dogs without a licence.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Jahki Dillas pleaded guilty to breeding a Dobermann pinscher-type dog without a licence between a date unknown and July 13 last year.

The 30-year-old also admitted keeping a red male Dobermann pinscher-type dog between December 31, 2010 and July 7 last year, and a black and tan female Dobermann pinscher between a date unknown and July 7 last year.

The court heard that animal wardens attended Dillas’ home on the Railway Trail where they saw the male dog tied up to a tree and also spotted the female dog and four puppies.

A database check determined that the defendant did not have a licence to breed or keep the dogs and the four puppies were seized.

In court, Dillas said he did not intentionally breed his dogs, having been overseas around that time.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $500 for each of the three offences.
