A Warwick man who admitted drink-driving twice in less than two months has been banned from driving for 18 months and fined $2,700.

Marco Costa, 37, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving over the limit on January 14 and March 1.

The court heard that Costa was found by police slumped over his bike on Harrington Sound Road, near Wilkinson Avenue, at about 3.20pm on January 14.

Traffic was forced to manoeuvre around Costa, who was asleep with his head on the handlebars.

Officers said Costa’s eyes were bloodshot, his breath smelled of alcohol, and he was unsteady on his feet.

He told police when questioned: “I had one beer at the game.”

A later breath test showed 228 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — close to three times the legal limit of 80/100.

Costa was caught again near his home on Cobbs Hill Road as police travelled to interview him in connection with an investigation at about 7.15pm on March 1.

Officers noticed Costa on a motorcycle as they neared the house and chased him towards South Road.

He was caught while trying to hide in a driveway in the area.

Officers said his eyes were bloodshot and his breath smelled of alcohol.

Costa admitted to police he had drunk two Elephant beers.

A later breath test showed that he had 148 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Costa told magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo: “I was just going through a bad time in my life. I made a mistake.”

Mr Tokunbo said: “You made two mistakes.”

He fined Costa $1,200 for the first offence and $1,500 for second. Costa was also given two 18-month bans, but Mr Tokunbo ordered they run concurrently.
