Drink-driver asleep at wheel

A driver found asleep at the wheel pleaded guilty yesterday to being in charge of a car while over the drink-drive limit.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Neville Tucker, 36, was found by police asleep in his car, which was parked at a bus stop at Pembroke Primary School.

When police woke Tucker they suspected he had been drinking and arrested him.

But he refused to take a breath test at Hamilton Police Station.

The incident took place on October 19 last year.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe banned Tucker from the roads for 18 months and fined him $1,000.

Tucker, from Devonshire, also pleaded guilty to a separate speeding offence.

He was caught driving at at 61km/h. The speed limit is 35km/h.

Mr Wolffe fined Tucker $310 for the speeding offence and ordered him to pay by October 25.
