Drug addict steals $2,700 from restaurant

A drug addict who broke into a Front Street restaurant and stole $2,700 was caught on CCTV.

Norman Bell, 59, pleaded guilty to the raid on Port O’ Call in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

An employee arrived at work on March 21 last year and found that a pane of glass was broken on a door to the restaurant off Chancery Lane, the court heard.

The employee later found a second-floor office door had also been damaged. It was later discovered that about $2,700 in cash had been taken from a desk.

Bell, from Warwick, was identified by police from the restaurant’s CCTV footage and arrested.

He also admitted to stealing cash from another business a few months later.

The court heard that Bell was given cash and cheques worth $3,200 by the owner of BKS Wholesale & Liquors, on Dundonald Street, Pembroke, to deposit at a bank last September.

The owner contacted police after Bell did not return to the business the next day and did not return phone calls.

Bell was arrested for the offence last October.

Bell told the court that money from the thefts was used to feed his drug addiction.

He added: “I’m tired of the way my life is.”

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered reports on Bell and remanded him in custody for Drug Treatment Court today.
