Killer dog’s owner given more time to pay compensation

A Pitbull terrier

A man has been unable to provide a family who lost their dog with any financial compensation.

Clifton Williams, 68, from Pembroke, pleaded guilty to owning a “pitbull-type dog” named Dora, which attacked and killed another dog named Frankie, owned by Akhil Kapur, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in August 2022.

He also admitted to owning the dog without a licence.

At that time, senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered that Williams to pay $7,430 in damages; the combined cost of a new dog and Frankie’s veterinary bill, to Mr Kapur.

However, Williams has failed to pay any of the money and was brought back to court yesterday.

At the hearing, Aura Cassidy, representing Williams, told magistrate Tyrone Chin that her client does not earn a steady source of income and had not done so for 20 years.

She said he has been able to support himself and his elderly mother through various charitable organisations.

Mr Chin highlighted that an alternative sentence for Williams, such as a community service or probation order, would not get the Kapur family the funds they were entitled to after losing their pet.

He gave Williams an additional three months to pay the compensation and adjourned the case until June 7.
