Woman pleads not guilty to theft charges

A Paget woman has denied allegations that she stole more than $50,000 from several local businesses and the Bermuda Government over a three-month span.

Lucia Swan, 43, appeared in Magistrates’ Court this week and pleaded not guilty to five counts of theft totalling $54,650.99, which are alleged to have occurred between September and November last year.

She also denied five allegations that she had falsely signed proof of delivery documents which indicated that the funds had been deposited.

Prosecutors alleged that Ms Swan stole more than $15,000 from Rubis Gas Station on or about September 2, 2022, and more than $12,500 from both Price Rite and Travel Edge in October 2022.

Ms Swan is also accused of stealing $3,280 from the Government on or around November 3, 2022 and another $10,800 from the Government the following day.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin released Ms Swan on $5,500 bail until August 14, when the matter is scheduled to be mentioned again in Magistrates’ Court.
