Man gets jail time for multiple offences

A man who stole more than $2,000 worth of items in Devonshire has been sentenced to almost three years behind bars.

Dwayne Hassan, 32, admitted a total of six offences when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

The offences, which occurred between March 20 and May 12, 2024, included trespassing on apartments on Cedar Park Road, and stealing from there a television, nightstand and other items.

They also included trying to take objects in Pembroke, entering a building on Friendship Lane with intent to steal and trespassing on Cambridge Beaches resort.

Hassan, from Devonshire, initially denied the charges, has been in custody for almost one year and reappeared in court on Thursday for sentencing.

Prosecutor Taneka King said Hassan, who has previous convictions, committed some offences while on bail and suggested that he be sentenced to three years behind bars.

Vaughan Caines, for Hassan, instead asked the court to impose a 2½-year sentence.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson sentenced Hassan to three months in prison for trespassing at Cambridge Beaches and six months for every other offence.

Each sentence will run consecutively and time already spent in custody will be taken into account.
