Somerset seeking revenge as St. George’s win mini Cup Match

By Derek deChabertSt George’s, 81 for three, beat Somerset, 80 all out, by seven wicketsSt George’s completed the first part of the Cup Match treble as they saw off arch rivals Somerset with minimal fuss at West Pembroke Primary field to hoist the mini Cup Match trophy.Hosted by the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the annual showcase for the junior cricketers saw Somerset bat first, with Sincere Hall leading the way in the run scoring category, as they were bowled out for 80 runs.Jabari Darrell added 15, while Jaquarri Paynter led the champions bowling attack with four wickets.In reply, the east enders finished on 81 for three, winning by a comfortable seven wickets.Sharri Tavares scored 30 with Paynter (17 not out) being useful with bat as well.The three wickets were shared among the western bowling attack.Hall was voted as the Somerset batsman MVP, while Robert Edwards the Somerset Fielding MVP award for his display in the field.Tavares was voted the St. George’s batting MVP, while Paynter took the Fielding honours with his bowling performance.The second piece of Cup Match bragging rights kicks off tomorrow at Somerset Cricket Club when the two clubs lock horns in Colts Cup Match.As many as ten players from the recent Bermuda Youth team to Florida could be included in Sunday’s Colts Cup Match at Somerset.The challengers Somerset have named their team and will be led by Shaquille Jones as they bid to reclaim the cup. Years ago the match was held towards the end of the school summer vacation but was recently brought forward to be held on the Sunday before Cup Match so that the young talent could be showcased before the Classic.Other members of the Bermuda youth team included for Somerset include Tre Manders, Alex Dore, Kwasi James, Kamal Easton and Christian Gibbons. St. George’s are likely to include Onias Bascome, Christian Burgess and Zeko Burgess, three members of the Bermuda team to Florida.“We are looking to go and win the match for the club, “ said Manders. “Hopefully we can get the cup back and look to win next week as well in the big game.”Players must be under 21 and are ineligible once they have played Cup Match.Somerset Colts team: Shaquille Jones (capt), Joshua Commisiong, Tre Manders, Brian Hall, Alex Dore, Justin Corday, Kwasi James, Kamal Easton, Tyshaun Brown, Marcus Johnson, Antonio Darrell, Christian Gibbons, Tristan Smith, Jakai Benjamin.
