Jones inspires Willow Cuts to victory

Malachi Jones of Willow Cuts

Malachi Jones single-handedly destroyed former club Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval. The top all rounder blasted a ruthless 94 from 47 deliveries and then claimed 3-35 in his third spell to inspire visiting Willow Cuts to a hard fought 25 run victory.Jones sealed Cuts’ uplifting win after bowling last man Andrew Raynor (19) after the latter had added 59 runs with fellow tailender Quinton Sherlock (33 not out) to inch Rangers closer to their target.Kavon Fubler seized 4-63 during his ten over spell that included a sole maiden to hold his end of the bargain.Rangers skipper Dion Stovell blasted six fours and two sixes in his knock of 66 for the home team who must have rued their decision to send Cuts into bat after winning the toss.Kwame Tucker (30), Derrick Brangman (23) and Janeiro Tucker (16) all made promising starts at the crease.Despite a brave fightback from Raynor and Sherlock — who shone with bat and ball — Rangers were dismissed in the 47th over with the finish line within sight.Sherlock’s unbeaten knock contained three fours and a solitary six.As well as claiming the last Rangers wicket to fall Jones bagged the prized scalp of Janeiro Tucker before the veteran all rounder shifted into high gear.Earlier, Cuts received healthy contributions from top order bats Dexter Basden (34), Chris Foggo (46) and Deunte Darrell (51) before Jones crashed the party coming in at six.Jones, who was dropped in the deep on 48, creamed nine sixes and six fours before falling six runs shy of a century. He raced to a half century off 26 balls and added 85 runs for the fifth wicket with Darrell whose own half century included seven fours. The usually reserved Basden broke from the norm, thumping three sixes and two fours to keep the scorers busy along with Foggo who helped himself to four fours and a six before falling four runs shy of a half century.Seamer Sherlock led the Rangers bowling with 3-54 while skipper Stovell claimed 2-43 with of his off spin. The loss was Rangers first of the season in all competitions while victory will have given Cuts a psychological edge ahead of their Western Counties title defence against the former in the opening round at White Hill Field on July 6.PHC 74 all outSt David’s 75-2St David’s made lightwork of PHC in this lopsided affair at Lords. The Islanders romped to an emphatic eight-wicket victory in a match lasting less than four hours.Led by skipper OJ Pitcher’s five-wicket haul, St David’s rolled PHC over for a paltry total in 32.4 overs as the visitors gamble to bat first after winning the toss backfired.Pitcher’s cousin, McClaren Lowe, blasted a brisk 32 before an unbroken 36-run third- wicket stand between Delyone Borden (16) and the on loan Richard Todd (21) carried the hosts safely across the line with 234 balls to spare.Lowe dominated a 34 run opening partnership with Borden, smashing five fours and two sixes. The opening bat roughed up new ball pair Shaquille Trott and Bancroft Haughton who both went for 15 runs in successive overs as Lowe cut loose.Second change Cal Waldron (1-32) eventually made the breakthrough after he had the free scoring Lowe caught. PHC claimed the wicket of number three bat Fiqre Crockwell (4) five runs later to reduce the hosts to 39-2 before Borden and Todd put up the shutters and anchored their team to victory.First change Charles Symonds (1-13) was the pick of the PHC bowling.Earlier, medium pacer Pitcher ripped the heart out of PHC on the way to impressive figures of 5-21 from eight overs that included three maidens.Fast bowler George OBrien Jr (2-13) and fourth change Crockwell (2-0) claimed two scalps each, the latter with only four deliveries.Kevin Dill (17) and Davin Dill (13) were the only PHC batsmen in double figures with 57 runs of the visitors’ total coming off the bat.PHC made a promising start to their innings with the two Dills adding 43 runs for the first wicket. But once the Islanders made the breakthrough the visitors completely lost the plot, with their remaining nine wickets tumbling for the addition of 31 runs.St George’s 290-8Western Stars 107 all outSeamer Machai Simmons bowled St George’s to a crushing 183-run victory against Western Stars at Wellington Oval. The second change bowler returned match winning figures of 6-28 off 8.1 overs that included two maidens as Stars were dismissed in 28.1 overs in reply to their hosts challenging total.Simmons, who bowled his overs unchanged, was ably supported by Zico Burgess who seized 2-33 respectively to cap a fine all round display with bat and ball.Wayne Campbell (20) led Stars’ unsuccessful run chase while Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) executive Nyon Steede (14), Rohan Davis (12 and Nacori Smith (13) were the only other bats in double figures. At one stage Stars were 52 for 2 before Simmons rolled his sleeves up and stamped his authority on the match.Earlier St George’s found runs easy to come by against a Stars side that leaked 40 extras in the field that included 20 wides and ten no balls after being asked to bat.The hosts received solid contributions throughout their order with Sinclair Gibbons leading the way with a half century. The wicketkeeper thumped nine fours and a six in his top knock of 51 from 45 balls.Gibbons added 89 runs with opener Chae Foggo (44) before he became the second wicket to fall to leave the hosts at 140-2.Foggo, who belted four fours and a six during his stay at the crease, also featured in a 51 run partnership for the first wicket with Damon Walker (24) as the hosts got their innings off to a flyer.Skipper Oronde Bascome thumped 30 (five fours) and Troy Hall 27 (four fours and a six) in the middle order while Burgess hit an unbeaten 45 that included four sixes and three fours further down the order.Bascome and Hall added 56 runs for the fifth wicket before Burgess and M’Kai Hodsoll (seven not out) produced an additional 51 runs in an unbroken ninth wicket stand that put the match further beyond Stars’ reach.Brian Hall and Steede both returned figures of 2-44 to lead Stars attack while Phillip Thomas (2-63) and Iejah Caines (2-54) also claimed two wickets apiece.Devonshire 159 all outFlatts 163-8Flatts chalked up their first win of the season after scraping past hosts Devonshire by two wickets at Devonshire Rec.Guiding the Eastern Counties team to victory were Vernon Eve and Regino Smith who shared six wickets between them and tail enders Durnell Smith and Paul Carr who provided their team’s run chase with impetus with the game on the line.Chasing a target of 160, Flatts were hobbling along at 94-7 before Smith (31 not out) and Chae Woolridge (0 not out) sealed victory via an unbroken 11-run ninth wicket partnership. That Flatts made it safely across the line with 127 balls to spare also owed much to Carr’s timely knock of 34 batting at number nine and the 49 runs Devonshire conceded in extras.Regino Smith (15), Hevonnie Brown (18) and Chris Daley (ten) were the only other Flatts batsmen in double figures.Darius Usher (2-21) was the pick of Devonshire’s bowling while Jodi Maroni (2-32) and Lamont Brangman (2-53) also claimed two scalps apiece.Earlier senior player Eve led by example on the way to impressive figures of 3-14 from 5.2 overs of left arm spin while Smith seized 3-26 from three overs and Daley 2-25 respectively.Jamal Simmons (22) and wicketkeeper Antoine Outerbridge (16) added 46 runs for the first wicket as Devonshire got their innings off to a promising start after electing to bat. But a middle and lower order collapse put paid to the home team’s hopes of posting a larger total as they were dismissed in the 36th over of the innings.Steven Bremar topped Devonshire’s batting with 40, Usher and Kevin Agarhans added 16 apiece while Brangman chipped in with 14 batting at seven.Flatts conceded 26 extras that included 15 wides. The Gazette was unable to obtain information on Somerset Bridge’s game against Warwick at White Hill Field and Somerset Cricket Club’s match against Cleveland at SCC.
