St David’s lift the title after wash-out

The White Hill field with the covers partially off shows a wet wicket yesterday which prevented any play in the league decider between Willow Cuts and St David's.

St David’s were crowned the Premier Division champions after heavy overnight and morning rain washed out the final round of league matches yesterday.Unbeaten St. David’s went into their final match with Willow Cuts holding a 12-point lead over Southampton Rangers and 16 over Cuts in a three team title race. However, the league programme suffered its first rain-out of the season on the day that the title was to be decided as all teams collected five points.A Bermuda Cricket Board official confirmed yesterday that the matches would not be rescheduled, leaving the Islanders to celebrate a second league title in three years.Wendell Smith led them to the league title in his first year as coach in 2011.St David’s captain OJ Pitcher said his team would have preferred to settle the title on the field.“It was in our favour and you can never predict the weather, so we take it as it comes,” said Pitcher.“We’ve had a good season and Willow Cuts, yes they are a good team but we would have loved to have played and won the game. The wicket was damp, the cover was off for a while and then the rain came back.”Last week Pitcher led St David’s to Eastern Counties success against Bailey’s Bay and now has a first league title as captain, though he insisted it was the team that deserves the credit.“A lot of people put emphasis on the captain but it’s the players who did the job,” Pitcher stressed. “They are the ones who have performed to the best of their ability all year in going undefeated.“It’s about the team, not one or two individuals. I’ve got a lot of senior players who voice their opinion and it’s up to you as captain whether you want to receive it or not.”No play was possible in any of the games, including at White Hill where Cuts were hoping to hand St David’s their first league defeat and throw the title race wide open.Rangers travelled to Sea Breeze Oval to meet the defending league champions Bailey’s Bay who finished a disappointing sixth in the league, while Devonshire Rec finished ninth after their match with Somerset was washed out.Rec were looking for victory to move ahead of eighth-placed Western Stars and qualify for the Logic Knockout Championship featuring the top eight teams. The competition starts next Sunday.Schedule: Logic Championship — St David’s (1) v Western Stars (8); Southampton Rangers (2) v Somerset (7); Willow Cuts (3) v Bailey’s Bay (6); Cleveland (4) v St George’s (5).Logic Plate - PHC v Warwick.
