Jones hits career-best score against Somerset

Jones scored a big century against Somerset in the Premier Division at the weekend

Malachi Jones was at the peak of his powers at Sea Breeze Oval where he produced the season’s highest individual and a career-best innings and claimed three wickets to guide Bailey’s Bay to a 199-run win over Somerset at the weekend.

Promoted up the order to opening batsman, the Bay all-rounder proved that he is more than capable of facing the new ball as he thumped 184 from 142 balls in the Premier Division match.

In all, he hammered 19 fours and ten sixes and added 73 runs for the first wicket with fellow opener Sinclair Smith and a further 177 for the third with Rodney Trott, the Bay captain, who scored 58.

Isiah Richardson, nephew of Somerset coach Jeff Richardson, bore the brunt of Jones’s onslaught as he went for 25 runs in his eighth over.

Jones’ swashbuckling knock eclipsed this season’s previous highest individual innings achieved by St David’s all-rounder Allan Douglas Jr who struck an unbeaten 160 against former club Cleveland County in a Premier Division contest at Wellington Oval on July 16.

Bay piled up 320 for six after electing to bat. Opening bowler Micah Simons led the Somerset attack with two for 60 while Jordan DeSilva, the captain, took two for 64.

Jones then returned figures of three for 19 as Somerset were dismissed 133 in 34.1 overs.

Greg Maybury led the visiting side’s batting with 35.
