Delray Rawlins has been granted an opportunity to pick the brains of Stuart MacGill, the former Australian leg spinner.

The Sussex all-rounder will receive specialist coaching from MacGill, who claimed 208 wickets in 44 Test appearances, during a stint Down Under this winter playing for Sydney Cricket Club in the New South Wales Premier competition.

“Be good to learn from him and he can help improve my game,” Rawlins, who bowls left-arm spin, told The Royal Gazette. “Looking forward to it.”

The Bermudian, 20, who made four appearances for Sussex in the Specsavers County Championship Second Division this season and toured India with England Under-19 at the start of the year, is one of eight English players awarded an Overseas Placement this winter as part of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s International Pathway programme.

“By exposing talented young players to an unsupported, unstructured cricket programme in a challenging overseas environment, the aim of Overseas Placements is to develop the skills and also independence required to be a successful international cricketer,” read an ECB statement.

Rawlins will also train with the New South Wales State squad during his stay in Sydney.

The former St George’s Cup Match player scored an unbeaten hundred on his youth one-day international debut for England Under-19 in India and 46 and 96 in the second and third matches.

The left-handed batsman scored 275 runs in five innings at an average of 68.75, before continuing his form into two Youth Tests, scoring 70 not out in the first match, and 140 and 49 in the second. Rawlins made his first-class debut for Sussex against Kent on the opening day of the championship season.

He scored a maiden fifty in the championship in the club’s season finale against promoted Nottinghamshire. Rawlins also helped Sussex win the Second XI Twenty20 tournament this summer.
