Southampton Rangers beat ten-man Somerset Cricket Club by three wickets in a low-scoring affair at Southampton Oval in the Premier Division Twenty20 yesterday.

Lamont Brangman claimed four for 20, Charles Trott three for 11 and Vernon Eve two for four as the visiting side were skittled for 93 in 16.3 overs after electing to bat.

Ricardo Brangman, the wicketkeeper, struck an unbeaten 32 and teenager Najiyah Raynor 31 as Rangers replied with 99 for seven off 14.1 overs.

Somerset found themselves reeling at 24 for four in the sixth over and never really recovered as they struggled to build meaningful partnerships.

Jeff Richardson, the Somerset coach, led his team’s batting with 24 from 17 balls, including two sixes and as many fours.

Dalin Richardson was next high man for the visiting side with 22 from 26 while Seth Gibbons chipped in with an unbeaten 17 from 13 balls.

In reply, Rangers also lost a bundle of early wickets that reduced them to 48 for five in the fifth over before Raynor, whose 27-ball knock contained four fours and a six, and Brangman, who thumped three fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 28-ball innings, produced a 28-run partnership to steady the ship.

Rangers suffered another late collapse as Jordan DeSilva, the Somerset captain, picked up three quick wickets before Brangman and Eve saw the home side to safety.

Tre Manders was the only other Rangers batsman in double figures with ten.

DeSilva was the pick of the Somerset bowling with three for seven. St George’s cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket triumph over Western Stars at St John’s Field. The visiting side dismissed Stars for 89 and then replied with 90 for three.

“I thought our performance was good,” said Lionel Cann, the deputising St George’s captain.

“We’re trying to win the tournament and the guys are up for it, so it was clinical fielding and the batting was even better.”
