Cann shows St George’s ‘what they missed’

Lionel Cann showed he still has runs left in him after marking his 50th appearance in the Eastern Counties with 62 to help St David's reclaim the trophy with a three-wicket win over Cleveland County at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday.

Chasing Cleveland's total of 155, St David's were 75 for four when Cann came to the crease and added 32 for the fifth wicket with Loren Marshall and then scored all but one of the runs in a 31-run stand with George O'Brien for the sixth wicket.

Cann, who was dropped by St George's for Cup Match last month, hit six sixes and three fours off 37 balls, but insists he does not think he has anything to prove at the age of 45.

“It was nice to perform so Bermuda could see what they missed at Cup Match,” said Cann, referencing St George's innings defeat to Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club. “I didn't even know about my 50th match until I read it in the newspaper.

“Obviously this is a dream, to score a 50 in your 50th match and win the trophy. I have put the work in, been focused and I'm getting the rewards.

“I'm enjoying the last few years of my game, as long as my body is fit enough I will continue.

“I'm passing on the knowledge to the youngsters who love having me around.”

St David's, who lost the cup to Bailey's Bay last summer, dismissed Cleveland for 155 off 55 overs before Cann's half-century took them to the brink of victory. He was out with just six runs still needed for victory.
