Young cricketer Jordan Burgess is determined to make the most of his talents as he prepares to play in Canada this summer.

The Bailey’s Bay left-arm seamer has joined JB Masters Tranzac, in the Toronto District Cricket Association, after agreeing to a deal keeping him at the club for at least one season.

“It’s a very nice opportunity and I am excited because I am playing and training more,” Burgess, 21, told The Royal Gazette. “It’s a new experience and I am around professional players, so the experience is there, and my coach [Sheriff Boodhoo] is really exposing me to new things.

“I am thinking more of the game and just learning every day out here with this team and the coaches. The coach is a really cool guy and has really taken me under his wing.

“I am around a lot of guys that have played international cricket for Canada, a couple of guys have played CPL and one or two guys have played for West Indies.”

Burgess is already familiar with his surroundings as he is studying electrical engineering at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario.

Stephen Outerbridge, the Bailey’s Bay president, is thrilled to see the player grasping an opportunity he believes could well become available for others at the club.

“I think he is the first of many,” Outerbridge said.

“When people look at the relationship with Gus Logie, they think it’s just about coaching Bailey’s Bay, but Gus is very resourceful and has contacts all over the world.

“We want to spread our players in various countries to get a good bit of experience and see them develop into much better players and much better people. We are focusing on the whole athlete and hopefully this is the first of many.

“We just finished our sponsorship packages, so Bailey’s Bay is looking for two to three-year commitments so we can execute our goals and develop our people.”

Logie, a former Bermuda coach and West Indies player, believes that Burgess’s new club is the perfect fit to aid in his overall development on and off the pitch.

“I am just happy that Jordan is in a good space at this point in time with his education and has the opportunity to pursue his passion for cricket in an environment that I believe is going to help develop him, not only as a good cricketer, but as a young human being as well,” he said.

“Many of the values that Sheriff is about are values that I myself endorse because it’s about the holistic development of our young people. So I am glad that he is there and is enjoying the experiences that he is having.

“He’s had the opportunity to train with some national players of Canada and that is going to help his development and mental strengths as well.

“We are happy for him with the experience and the support that he has around him. Tat’s what we are here to do, to support him as best as possible in his development.”

Burgess is fired up for his debut season at this level in which he hopes to make an impact with the ball.

“I just want to get an understanding of how cricket is played out here and how the wickets play,” he said.

“I just want to try to get as many wickets as I can because they say out here the ball really moves a lot and the wickets are pretty decent.

“Out here I am around cricket and everyone loves playing the game. It’s good to be around people who love the game and I am around some good guys and learning every training session.”

Burgess thrived with Bay last season, claiming more than 20 wickets in all competitions, and helping the Sea Breeze Oval club regain the coveted Eastern Counties trophy.

Asked if he will miss his team-mates back home, Burgess said: “Of course I am going to miss my team-mates but I may be able to come and play a few games. I don’t know how my school schedule is going to be but Eastern Counties is on Saturday so that is a maybe.”

While there is a possibility the player will be available for Bay’s Eastern Counties title defence, it remains to be seen if he will try to retain his place in St George’s’ Cup Match team after making his debut in the Annual Classic last year.

“Cup Match is on Thursday and Friday and I may have school exams around that time because I am in an advance programme, so instead of having summer off I go right through to next year,” Burgess added. “It is on my mind but I still have to make the team, so it’s not a sure thing.

“I would be bummed if I miss out on the trials and stuff, but we just have to wait and see how the school year goes as it’s too early to tell, but I am still young and so I could get recalled again if I am unable to come back for Cup Match.”
