The Bermuda Cricket Board has entered into a partnership with Keep Bermuda Beautiful in an effort to grow its sustainability goals.

The two charities are looking to work together to minimise cricket’s environmental footprint in Bermuda in light of the two international tournaments that will be hosted on the island in September.

The first Bermuda Premier League is taking place from September 7 to 10 before the island’s team seeks to qualify for next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup via the Americas Final Qualifier being held from September 30 to October 7.

Antigua, Barbados and Bermuda are lined up for the inaugural BPL, while The ICC Americas men’s T20 final qualifying round will feature Canada, Cayman, Panama, and Bermuda battling for the sole spot at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies.

Both events are expected to attract local and international spectators, with thousands expected to witness the action. Concerns have been raised on the impact that will cause to the environment, with a lot of foodstuffs being consumed by the fans over that busy period.

Calvin Blankendal, the BCB's executive director, spoke of his delight at the arrangement they have entered into with KBB.

“The BCB is pleased to partner with KBB on developing our sustainability goals for the Bermuda Premier League (BPL) and International Cricket Council (ICC) – ICC America's Men's Final T20 World Cup Qualification round,’’ Blankendal said.

“The BCB and KBB will engage with key stakeholders in a collaborative effort to minimise the amount of trash generated from these two exciting events, recycle and correctly dispose of waste.

“Over the winter months, we will focus our attention on reducing the environmental impact of regular league play starting with the introduction of the BCB's Waste Management Plan for the 2024 cricket season.”

Traci Burgess, executive director with KBB said: “We are excited to work with the BCB on developing their sustainability goals and implementing a green events Waste Management Plan for the upcoming ICC tournaments. In an effort to reduce the amount of waste generated by the events, the plan will eliminate certain types of single-use plastics and promote the use of reusable products and recyclable materials, mainly tin, aluminium and glass.”

Last year, KBB partnered with the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, as well as American professional golfer Darren Points, to clean up the Southampton and Sandys Parish communities.
