Police issue warning about scammer

A scammer is attempting to cash in on kindness by falsely claiming to be collecting donations for charity, according to police.In a statement yesterday , a police spokesman said: “It has come to our attention that an unknown individual has attended at least one home claiming to be collecting donations for Autism Awareness Month.“April is Autism Awareness Month, however none of the established local charities are soliciting donations at this time.“Once again, the Bermuda Police Service would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant regarding scams.”Susanna Cole of Bermuda Autism Support and Education (BASE) said that she had heard about the con, and asked the public to contact charities directly before making donations, and to only donate to registered charities.“I feel terrible for the people who have been misled in this way,” she said. “Unfortunately, because this is Autism Awareness Month, there has been a lot of press coverage.“Here I feel we have a situation where someone is taking advantage of people's kind hearts and their desire to help.”She expressed concern that not only could cons like this cost members of the public, it could hurt the reputations of legitimate charities dedicated to help.“I'm worried that this could not only reflect negatively the reputation of autism in the public, but hurt all of the charities who are out there doing good work.”Those who do wish to donate to Autism Awareness can do so through the BASE website, www.bermudaautism.org.Useful website: www.bps.bm.Woman injured in three-vehicle accidentA Hamilton Parish woman was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) yesterday after a three-vehicle collision in Devonshire.According to a police spokesman, a jeep, a car and a motorcycle were all travelling on North Shore Road neat the junction with Cable Hill when the three vehicles collided.Officers arrived at the scene at around 8.25am and found that only the 33-year-old rider of the motorcycle was injured.She was treated for minor injuries at KEMH and released.Useful website: www.bps.bm.
