Mayo the favourite in mountain bike finale

Bermuda Bicycle Association’s (BBA) mountain biking season comes to an end tomorrow with the Winners Edge Championship at Ferry Reach Park. Some 50 riders are expected on the start line with Dominique Mayho the strong favourite. Mark Hatherley, Dexter Swan and Hans Hirschi could be among the contenders.Mayho was the 2011 junior champion and is looking for his first senior championship. He has won all of the local off-road races in the 2012 season, including two end-to-end events, the three-hour endurance race and the seven races that comprised the Latter Rain Water Service Mountain Bike Series. The junior male category should give Bermuda Institute student Deshi Smith an opportunity to show off his fitness and technical skills against others in the 18 and under age group.Gabriella Arnold and Elizabeth Jordon will be the main contenders in the junior female race.Non-championship races will be held for the 13-16 and 12-and-under categories. This season has seen the sport grow, mirroring the upswing of road racing numbers over the last few years.“This year, thanks to the work of organisers Hans Hirschi, Dexter Swan and James Holloway, we have seen larger than typical numbers of racers in all categories with many of the new riders using this as a first opportunity to try cycle racing,” said BBA president Peter Dunne.“Seeing more seasoned road riders such as Karen Smith, Kent Richardson and Karen Bordage try this discipline has brought more attention to the sport, which is obviously a good thing.“Some of our top juniors have been using the off-road season to work on their handling skills as well as race intensity.”The BBA’s road racing season got underway last week with a 10-mile time trial which was won by Mayho. The next event is the first race in the IBC Criterium Series to be held at Southside on April 1 which could attract up to 130 riders. For more information visit www.bermudabicycle.org.
