Silence is deafening

Minister of Education Nalton Brangman

Allegations made against Education Minister Nalton Brangman by Walton Brown that he did not take some qualifications mentioned on his CV are extremely serious. In the overall scheme of things, the actual qualifications referred to are really neither here nor there — the Bermuda College technical programme, Electricity, Basic Theory and Application and the Bermuda College technical programme, Electricity, Advanced Theory and Application — are not crucial to his current job.Because of that, some people will be saying ‘big deal’, if it’s not relevant to his job, why rake it up? Why be politically mischievous? There are two salient points, however. It is difficult for staff to look a boss in the eye thinking that they may have made something up in such a way. For an Education Minister to have allegedly made something up about his own educational career is going to make his relationship with teachers extremely difficult.Mr Brangman issued a statement through the Department of Communications and Information reiterating that he did pass the two courses. In this newspaper’s story yesterday, Mr Brown called on the Premier to “hold true to his commitment to both integrity and transparency in public office and act accordingly to bring this cynical abuse of public trust to an end”.The fact that he has not issued a statement or answered this newspaper’s questions is strange — strange because the Premier has not come out and publicly supported someone who, presumably, was his Cabinet pick.In politics, silence is really deafening.
