Volunteers from a major business services company are tutoring students.

Throughout this academic year, PwC Bermuda employees are tutoring seven students enrolled in Family Centre’s Youth Leadership Academy.

Deneca Zuill, YLA lead co-ordinator, said students in the programme had more self-confidence because of the programme.

She added: “The PwC volunteers bring enthusiasm and expertise to the programme and provide invaluable assistance to our students striving to excel in their studies.”

The volunteer tutors are Sahitya Khurana, Lily Liu, Madele Coetzee, Akila Craig, Werner Pieters, Zureena Rubaine and Ankita Goyal.

Ms Coetzee, manager at PwC, found the experience very rewarding and humbling.

She said: “Seeing the progress made by the student I tutor, in terms of her attitude towards difficult academic concepts and the expectations that she sets for herself really shows that with hard work anything is possible.

“Seeing her improvement makes me so proud of her efforts and accomplishments.”

Ms Rubaine, senior associate at PwC, said: “It's fulfilling to be able to offer my time and knowledge to help students improve their maths skills.

“Being able to see the student I am tutoring gain more confidence and an overall understanding of her studies has been really rewarding."

The tutoring initiative is part of PwC Bermuda’s ten-year, $250,000 funding and volunteering commitment to Family Centre.

Sandy De Silva, the charity’s executive director, said this commitment had allowed the organisation to sustain its services and programme.

“The encouragement, positive presence and academic support provided by PwC volunteers helps youth feel valued and want to strive to meet their life goals,” Dr De Silva explained.

Scott Watson-Brown, a partner at PwC Bermuda, thanked the volunteers for donating their time and talents to the charity.

He said: “PwC is proud to be a long-term supporter of Family Centre in their mission to create a healthier Bermuda for our children, by providing critical intervention and counselling services. By working together, we can create meaningful change and improve lives.”
