Head to Pembroke Community Club on Sunday for a new buying experience.

Sisters Michelle and Ris Smith decided Bermuda needed a market for new and vintage clothing, baked goods, original artwork, furniture and oddball knick-knacks.

Expect music and a few surprises at The Urban Market, the sisters’ modern take on garage sales and flea markets.

Look for it on the last Sunday of every month, from 11am until 4pm. The Smiths spoke with Lifestyle about the venture.

Where did the idea for your market come from?

We’ve both attended and participated in local flea markets and numerous garage sales and found the experiences exciting, but also underwhelming at times.

Word doesn’t always get around fast enough, and a lot of the time the turnout can be weak. As we discussed the possibility of hosting our own sale, we decided that the best way to have a successful turnout is to create routine.

The Urban Market has already sparked the interest of individuals who would not only like to participate this month, but in months to come. [It’s] an opportunity that we believe the community can greatly benefit from. It gives both small, upstart businesses and the average person the chance to sell items in a fun and family-friendly environment.

Why did you decide to hold the market on a Sunday?

We initially thought to have the event on Saturdays, but quickly abandoned the idea as we would be competing with retailers and routine Saturday activities.

We hope that the Urban Market can become a staple Sunday event.

What kind of items do you expect will be on sale?

All sorts of items. As long as they are clean, family- friendly, fit through the door and are gone by the end of the day, we have no issues.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from?

The word ‘urban’ is establishing a culture of its own. [It was] originally [used] in relation to metropolitan cities; the irony is that the younger generation relates this more to the thought of a vintage and repurposing culture. The Urban Market is trying to strengthen the younger generation’s interpretation of actual, repurposed items, and not those purchased in stores to look second-hand. With the state of the economy and the struggles of the community, this is an endeavour to help everyone out.

Who is involved in this project so far?

We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but we are having a few, small local businesses take part, as well as a DJ to provide some atmosphere.

Do either of you have experience in business? What are your backgrounds?

A [We both] majored in arts in university, [but our] career paths turned out to be quite different. Michelle, 31, is a marketing professional with backgrounds in event planning and management, having previously worked at the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce co-ordinating Harbour Nights. Ris, 27, [has a] background that encompasses financial business, retail and customer service. This has worked to [our] advantage, allowing [us] to approach this endeavour from two different angles, and come up with one cohesive idea.

Any experience in retail or just been to lots of markets yourselves?

We’ve been involved in various aspects of retail both locally and abroad but we are also avid shoppers and in our travels have experienced the joy of finding unique treasures in varied markets.

Considering we launched our Facebook page [only recently], we’re pretty pleased with how quickly the word is spreading and how excited people seem to be about it. We still have a few tables for rent, so hopefully we can fill those spaces soon.

What are some of the more interesting items on sale?

We can promise clothes, toys and decor. Items will be straightforward until we better understand the demographic.

Tables cost $20. E-mail urbanmarket.bda@gmail.com.
