Nahki Wells and Luton Town continue winning ways

Nahki Wells and Luton Town bolstered their promotion hopes after coming from behind to edge Northampton Town 2-1 in the Sky Bet League One at Kenilworth Road on Wednesday.

The result extended their unbeaten home league record to 11 games and lifted the Hatters three places, from tenth to seventh in the standings. They are now just three points adrift of the play-off positions.

Luton were forced to chase the game after Sam Hoskins put Northampton in front in the 31st minute, but Luton hit back with Liam Walsh grabbing a 43rd minute equaliser and Kal Naismith the winner five minutes from time.

Bermuda striker Wells retained his spot in Jack Wilshere’s starting XI and was on the pitch for 66 minutes before being replaced by Ali Ibrahim Al-Hamadi with the game deadlocked at 1-1.

Luton are unbeaten in their last six league matches and have won four of the last eight outings in all competitions.

The Hatters were back in action just three days after beating league rivals Stockport County 3-1 in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with Wells scoring twice either side of the interval during an outstanding man-of-the-match performance.

Also involved in League One action this week was Bermudian goalkeeper Nathan Trott, whose Cardiff City were held to a 1-1 draw away to Wells’ former club Huddersfield Town at Kirklees Stadium on Tuesday.

The Terriers led 1-0 through Ryan Ledson’s 27th minute strike before Bluebirds substitute Yousef Salech equalised in second-half stoppage time to rescue a point for the visitors.

Cardiff remain second behind leaders Lincoln City, who they trail by 11 points, and occupy the remaining automatic promotion spot on offer.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s team have won just two of their last nine games, with Trott adamant that the Welsh club are still in a strong position to make an immediate return to the Championship after being relegated to League One for the first time since 2003 last season, just six years after playing in the Premier League.
