Government swamped by companies offering internships

Let’s get to work: internships for college students are still available (Photograph supplied)

The Government’s Department of Workforce Development has been swamped by companies offering internships to college students this summer.

A spokesman for the department said it had been “overwhelmed” by employers offering training vacancies to students on their summer break.

The spokesman said: “Following the initial recruitment drive, students had fully subscribed for the programme spots. However, some students did not follow through with the required documentation and others decided to take opportunities in other areas.

“Additionally, the department has had an overwhelming response from employers who wish to provide opportunities to students.

“As such, the Department of Workforce Development is reaching out to the community to offer this employment opportunity to students who may not have successfully secured employment or want a more challenging summer job experience.

“The summer employment programme continues to be an excellent opportunity for young students to earn an income and gain industry experience while still completing their education.”

Internship applicants must hold Bermudian status and be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Students can register at the Department of Workforce Development, located at the old Magistrates’ Court on Parliament Street, between 9.30am and 11.30am until Thursday.

Alternatively, applicants can register by clicking here and creating a candidate profile. After creating your profile, select “Looking for Summer Student Position” under Current Job Status, and create a candidate record.

Whether applying in person or online, applicants must provide their social insurance number, proof of health insurance, proof of enrolment in a college or university, and proof of a bank account.

For additional information, call 297-7714 or e-mail sepinfo@gov.bm with “Summer Employment Programme” in the subject field.
