Charity hosts furniture sale after storefront closure
Habitat for Humanity of Bermuda will host a one-day blowout sale this weekend after the closure of ReStore on Front Street.
The sale is set to take place at the old Cottage Hospital and former prison service headquarters, a listed building on Happy Valley Road in Pembroke, next to Belvin’s Variety.
ReStore offers new or gently used items, including home furnishings and art, to help finance projects to refurbish homes.
The sale runs from 10am until 4pm on Saturday with a wide variety of items on sale to support the charity.
Sheila Cooper, chairwoman of Habitat for Humanity Bermuda, said: “We have coaches, beds, lamps and all nature of furniture for your house.
“Everything must go and there will be truckers standing by for hire.
“All of the funds from the ReStore go directly to our projects. At the moment, we have three projects in progress including four new apartments in Devonshire and two houses in Warwick.”
The 24-year-old charity is dedicated to renovating or expanding substandard housing to increase the island’s stock of affordable residences.
Its mission is to “assist those living in derelict conditions to make home improvements that will ensure that every Bermudian may live in a safe, secure and healthy home”.
The charity vacated its Front Street store front in the former Bluck’s Building last month after deciding against carrying out necessary building repairs.
Habitat had hoped it could do the renovations, moving the operation online until the work was completed, but it was eventually determined that the project would be too drawn-out and expensive to take on.
Ms Cooper said yesterday that the search for a new location was ongoing.
“We have a few possibilities but nothing firm as of yet,” she said. “We are optimistic that we will find something that is a good fit for us.”
