Youth spending a topic for Brave Conversations
Parents will get guidance on navigating the spending habits of their teenage children as part of a Raleigh Bermuda event this week.
The charity is continuing its Brave Conversations series to help families better understand young people’s financial decision-making and behaviours.
Brave Conversations: Navigating Young People’s Spending for Parents will take place on Saturday from 10am to 1pm at a central location to be shared upon registration.
Designed for parents and guardians of young people aged 14 and over, the session combines practical budgeting guidance with insights on discussing saving, spending, impulse purchases, habits and long-term financial behaviours.
The session will feature guest speaker Budget Buddy, a Bermudian-based budgeting service.
Parents will explore how adolescent and young adult brains respond to rewards, habits, social pressure and financial decision-making.
“Many parents are trying to prepare young people for adulthood, but money conversations can often feel overwhelming or difficult to navigate,” said Denae Burchall, Raleigh’s executive director.
“We often tell young people to save their money or make better financial choices without always teaching the practical skills needed to do so — and many adults are still navigating those habits themselves.
“This session is about creating honest, practical conversations that help families build healthier financial habits together.”
The event forms part of Raleigh’s broader Brave Conversations initiative, creating spaces for open community dialogue around issues impacting young people.
Participants are invited to make a cash donation to support Raleigh’s youth development programmes.
