Jason Hayward: ‘I’m no woman-beater’

Jason Hayward has challenged rumours on social media accusing him of domestic abuse.

The Minister of Economy and Labour stood in the House of Assembly on Friday and vehemently denied having committed violence against women.

He added: “If any evidence is brought forward that I engaged in any of those activities, I will resign my position as a Member of Parliament.”

Mr Hayward told the House that he was forwarded a message on January 21 claiming he was “an abuser of women” and that previous partners, including his wife, had left him for that reason.

He added that shortly before putting his name forward as a candidate to lead the Progressive Labour Party, he received a voice message making these accusations.

Mr Hayward emphasised it was “an unsubstantiated, malicious rumour”.

He added: “If they bring the information to you, Mr Speaker, I’m asking you to remove me from this House for lying to the people of Bermuda.”

Mr Hayward said: “I wake up every morning and try to do my best for the people of this country.

“I’ve dedicated 22 years of my life to helping people, serving people and helping communities.

“For whatever reason, evil in our community would determine that they’re hellbent on destroying my character.

“I have never engaged in domestic violence, I am not a woman-beater and I have never abused a woman. It is sad that I have to say that.”
