Swan family thank community for prayers and support
The family of Sir John Swan said they were grateful for the outpouring of support in the wake of the National Hero’s recent death.
Sir John, the island’s longest-serving premier and a successful real estate and development businessman, passed away last week at the age of 90.
In a statement, the Swan family said they were profoundly moved by the many people in Bermuda and across the globe who have shared their love, support, prayers and kindness.
It said: “Your words have brought us great comfort and have reminded us of the countless lives our father has touched throughout his life.
“Our father loved Bermuda deeply and believed wholeheartedly in its people.
“He came from humble beginnings and never lost sight of the values of hard work, humility and service that shaped his life.”
The family said that Sir John had expressed a wish for a “simple and dignified service” that reflected who he was rather than the positions that he held.
Their statement added: “We are sincerely grateful to the Government of Bermuda for its exceptional co-operation and respect in helping to ensure that his wishes are carried out.
“On behalf of our entire family, thank you for your kindness, prayers and many expressions of sympathy.
“Your support has meant more to us than words can adequately express.”
The Cabinet Office announced that a book of condolences will be available for the public to sign at the Cabinet Office from 10am on June 16.
Flags on all government buildings will remain at half-mast until sundown on the day of Sir John’s funeral. Government offices will close at noon on that day, with more details about the funeral service to be released.
A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: “Sir John lived a full and incredible life. The celebration of his decades of service to Bermuda will reflect his clear wishes and the Government of Bermuda continues to support his family at this difficult time.”
