Pearman claims 16th title

Title triumph: Dwayne Pearman

The Bermuda Professional Golf Association Championship has proven to be happy hunting ground for Dwayne Pearman and this year was no exception as the veteran professional golfer won by a comfortable margin at Riddell’s Bay Golf & Country Club.

Pearman conquered the blustery conditions, slick greens and tricky pin placements to capture his sixteenth BPGA title at Bermuda’s oldest golf course.

He completed the 36-hole event with a two round seven-over-par 147 to remain four shots clear of the chasing pack.

Pearman shot a five over 75 during the opening round to cling to a two-shot lead over Chris Smith at the halfway stage and followed that up with a two over par 72 in the second to capture both the open and senior divisions.

“I doubled dipped,” Pearman said. “I didn’t play great but it was good enough to win. I was actually under the weather a bit so I was surprised I won it.”

With his ball striking off the tee not up to par, Pearman relied heavily on his putting which has come on in leaps and bounds lately.

“My putting is really strong at the moment,” he said. “I’m not hitting the ball as good as I want to hit it. So my putting is pretty much the strength of my game right now.”

Andrew Trott, Scott Roy, Anthony Mocklow, Brian Morris and Camiko Smith finished four shots behind Pearman in a five-way tie for second at 11 over par 151.

Smith carded a three under 67 during the second — the lowest round of the tournament. He also shot the tournament’s second highest round, a 14 over par 84, that left him with a lot of catching up to do during the final round.
