Dr J, Julius Erving, will be in Bermuda this week

For those of you who like celebrity spotting, Port Royal Golf Course is the place to be seen tomorrow as stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment descend on Bermuda.

The Celebrity Golf Invitational tournament is one of the highlights of Black Golfers Week, organised by the Bermuda Tourism Authority, and the event has attracted sporting legends as well as one of America’s leading Black comedy actors.

Among those taking part from the world of basketball is Julius Erving, commonly referred to as Dr J. Hall of Famer Erving has been named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time and is the eighth-highest scorer in history. He won three championships and four MVP awards.

He is joined by Metta Sandiford-Artest, formerly known as Ron Artest and Metta World Peace, who won an NBA championship in 2010 with the Los Angeles Lakers, the same franchise with which Michael Cooper, who will also be in attendance, won five championships.

Anthony ‘Spud’ Webb is shortest player in history to win Slam Dunk contest

Three-times champion Byron Scott will also be playing alongside Anthony “Spud” Webb, who won the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest despite being one of the shortest players in NBA history at 5ft 6in.

There are Super Bowl champions galore among the travelling contingent with Warren Sapp, Byron Chamberlain, Willie Gault, Santonio Holmes, Richard Dent and Freddy McCrary all heading to the island.

Terrell Owens, one of the NFL’s greatest wide receivers, will take part at Port Royal

One of the greatest wide receivers of all time, Terrell Owens, also makes the trip as does Bo Jackson, the only professional athlete in history to be named an all-star in both baseball and American football.

Baseball is represented by Johnny Damon, a two-times World Series winner with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. He will be accompanied by Garry Sheffield, a nine-times All-Star and 1997 World Series winner.

Gary Sheffield is getting ready to tee off at Port Royal

John W. Carlos, who along with gold medal-winner Tommie Smith was responsible for one of the most iconic images of the 20th century when giving the Black Power salute on the podium after winning the bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics, is again competing.

Anthony Anderson, who is perhaps best known for his leading roles in Black-ish, K-Ville, Law & Order and Guys with Kids, will also be among those teeing off at 9am at the Southampton course.
