Betscharts thrilled with chance to play Pinehurst
Darina Betschart is grateful to have had the privilege of showcasing her budding talent at the prestigious North & South Junior Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina.
The promising golfer overcame a tough start to finish tied for 72nd at 29-over 245 in the 90-strong girls division.
“I had a really great time playing in the North & South Junior Amateur Championship in Pinehurst over the past few days,” Betschart told The Royal Gazette.
“It was my first time here and it was such an amazing experience to play courses with so much history and compete against such a strong field of players.
“The first round was on Pinehurst No 2, which was definitely a big challenge. The greens and the areas around them were very demanding and I learnt quickly that you have to be in the right positions and stay patient throughout the round.
“I then played Pinehurst No 5 for the next two days and felt like I started to understand my game and the course a little better each day.
“I shot 86 in the first round followed by an 82 and then a 77 in the final round. I was happy that I was able to improve every day.
“Even when the course gave me a few difficult moments, I kept grinding, stayed positive, and tried to focus on one shot at a time.
“Finishing with a 77 gave me confidence and showed me that I can keep fighting and improve during a tournament.”
The experience exposed flaws in Betschart’s game she will address moving forward.
“Playing this week showed me that there is still room for improvement in my game, especially when it comes to managing difficult courses, recovering from missed shots and staying patient when things are not going perfectly,” she said.
“But that is part of why I enjoy competing at events like this because every round teaches me something.
“Overall, I gave it my all, learnt a lot and had such a memorable experience for my first time in Pinehurst.
“I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play in this championship and hope I can come back again in the future.”
Next up for Betschart is next week’s Caribbean Junior Amateur Championship in the Dominican Republic, where she is representing a Bermuda Golf Association select.
“It will be exciting to compete as part of a team, represent Bermuda and take what I learnt this week in Pinehurst into the next challenge,” she said.
Betschart was accompanied at Pinehurst by brother Oliver, who finished tied for 45th at 11-over 223 in the 90-strong boys division.
Like his sister, the top local amateur learnt valuable lessons and took positives away from the experience to test himself at this level.
“Overall, it was a good learning experience,” he said.
“Even though the score didn’t fully reflect it, there were a lot of positives to take away from this week. I got better each day after a tough start and finished 45th.
“My putter was probably the strongest part of my game all week and helped me stay in it, but I wasn’t hitting the ball as accurately as I would have liked, which is so important around Pinehurst’s turtleback greens. We played Pinehurst No 2 on the second day and it was a great test.”
The tournament was a good warm-up for the promising player who is competing in next week’s North & South Men’s Amateur Championship at the same venue.
“It was great preparation for the North & South Amateur next week,” he said. “I’ll spend the next few days making a few adjustments and getting ready for that challenge.”
